Hello Everyone,
We would like to tell you a little bit about Capon Springs to give you a feel of the place and what to expect on your visit.
Capon is a home style resort that was originally developed as a fresh water spring spa back in the 1800’s. It has since become a family style resort with a simple feel and special connection to its natural surroundings. It retains its reliance on the fresh water spring with its readily available pure drinking water, fresh water showers, amazingly cold spring water-fed pool, and its relatively new spa, with fully private large tiled soaking tubs and massages. Expect to experience a simple unassuming mountain resort feeling to all the amenities.
As most of you know, our family has been going to Capon the 2nd week in August every year for 30 years along with the rest of Martha’s immediate family, which has been going that week for about 42 years.
Travel
Capon is about a 2 hour and 45 minute drive from Baltimore and Washington DC. The closest airport is Dulles, and the closest large town is Winchester, VA., about ½ an hour from Capon. All parking is on site in open gravel lots around the facility. When you arrive from Baltimore, there will be a pond on your left as you enter the resort. As you continue up the road, you will see the Main House on your right. It is a white wooden building with green trim and a brick staircase in front. This is where you check in and receive your room information.
You can pull your car up to some spaces along the side of the street near the main house entry steps to check in. It is also possible to arrive from the other side of the mountain if you are coming from Northern VA or the DC Area. I would advise getting to the resort before dark if you are taking this route because it involves about 15 minutes of driving on a gravel mountain road to enter the resort. If you come in this way, you will see the main house on your left as you come down the hill after entering the resort.
Accommodations and Arrival Schedules
It is up to all of you to decide if you would like to arrive on Friday or Saturday. Capon is an all inclusive destination with Guest Rooms and Meals. All the rooms are on site and within very short walks to the main house where the Dining Room is located.
If you decide to come on Friday and arrive by 5:00PM, you are invited to join everyone else arriving by that time for a Welcoming Reception at 5:00PM hosted by the Benavents before Dinner is served in the Dining Room.
When you check in, you will notice that you do not receive a key. The rooms can be locked from the inside when they are occupied, but at Capon there is no need to lock your doors when you leave your rooms.
Each guest will be responsible for the cost of room and board which includes Breakfast, Lunch and dinner depending on arrival and departure times. Dinner for Saturday night will be courtesy of the Socolars and dinner for Friday night will be courtesy of the Benavents.
The rooms are very basic. There is no TV, phone service, or Wifi! Free Internet is available in a building next to the Main House called “The Meeting House.” You may receive spotty phone connections throughout the grounds. Most people can use their phones on the golf course.
Please bring your own shampoo, conditioner, and hair driers. Capon does provide soap.
There will be rooms available for everyone attending. We have done our best to place each of you near people that you know.
Meals
The menus for each meal are pre determined by the resort and there are no limitations to portions of main or side dishes. The cooking is home style. There are Gluten Free and vegetarian options available for every meal.
If you have any food allergies or Glutton free requirements, please let the front desk know when you contact them to arrange your room.
Breakfast is served with Coffee, Hot Chocolate, and fresh spring water on the table in pitchers.
Lunches and dinners are served with Ice tea and fresh spring water. There are no soft drinks or alcoholic beverages served in the dining room.
Though Capon does not serve alcohol, there will be alcohol provided for adults of legal drinking age at the welcoming reception on Friday night and at the Wedding Reception. Everyone of legal drinking age is welcome to bring alcohol for your personal use or to share with friends of legal drinking age in your rooms or on your porches. If you would like access to cold beverages, we suggest bringing a cooler. There is a cold soda vending machine and unlimited ice available from an ice machine in the main house.
Activities
There are 3 Tennis courts, 4 Shuffle Board courts, 5 ping pong tables, 2 Badminton courts, a spring water swimming pool and a multitude of beautiful trails of easy to medium difficulty available. All of these activities are included at no additional charge.
There is a beautiful 9 hole golf course with on site golf carts available. Walking golf bag carts are also available on site. There is a fee for the golf course. Golf is a fixed rate per day regardless of how many holes played, as are the cart rentals. Just play as much golf as you would like and when you check out, report how many days you played and if you used a cart. It is all on the honor system. You do not need to sign up for a Tee Time or arrange for a cart. Simply report to the first Tee and it is first come first serve to play. You can walk into the golf cart shelters and select a cart that does not have any golf bags on it. When you have a cart, you are welcome to leave your bags on it until you are ready to leave.
We are planning a Best Ball Golf challenge for teams of 4 on Saturday morning. There will be a sign up sheet in the main house and we will select the teams based on your signing in as beginner, intermediate, or advanced player.
There is also a spa with large private tiled soaking tubs and massages available. There is a fee for use of the tubs and massages. Please call ahead to schedule a soak or massage.
Attire
While we would like cocktail attire for the wedding ceremony and reception, the dress at Capon is casual. We suggest bringing shorts, jeans, Khakis, bathing suits, T shirts, sweaters, walking shoes, golf shoes, tennis shoes, hiking shoes, whatever is comfortable for you based on the weather and the activities you plan to participate in. The pool provides towels. They are rather small, so if you prefer having a large towel for the pool, please bring one with you. There are washing machines with detergent and dryers on site at no charge if you need them.
We look forward to seeing you!
Sincerely,
Serge and Martha
